Singapore youths go down fighting

27th July, Helsinki: Singapore's Daphne Tan and New Hui Fen lost to the Colombian pair in the Girl's Doubles title match of the World Youth Championship 2010 to settle for the silver medal while Shayna Ng and Jazreel Tan shared the bronze with Korea.

Daphne Tan and New Hui Fen redeemed themselves of their disappointing Singles effort with a spirited performance to finish second with 2535 to runnaway Korean pair of Kim Yeon-Ju and Kim Moon-Jeong, who totaled 2663 in the first squad.

Singapore's second pair of Shayna Ng and Jazreel Tan did better by topping the second squad with 2575 ahead of Colombia's Laura Fonnegra and Maria Jose Rodriguez on 2535. The Colombian's final game of 462 was higher than that of Daphne and Hui Fen to claim third seed overall.

Both the Singapore pair avoided each other as the Koreans would face Daphne and Hui Fen while Shayna and Jazreel would face the Colombians in the knockout semi-finals.

But the second-seed, Shayna and Jazreel were eliminated by Fonnegra and Rodriguez, 392-412 to settle for the bronze medal. Daphne and Hui Fen ousted top seed Korea, 456-414 in the other semi to book their spot in the finals.

The final brought the best out of both pairs and the Singapore youths did not go down without a fight as they were narrowly edged by the Clombians, 473-481 to be denied their first gold.

Jazreel's 1323 in the doubles event moved her up into ninth in the All Events standings with 2533. Daphne also improved to 12th position with 2494 while Shayna moved up three notches to 15th with 2480.

Hui Fen finished 19th position with 2451, just 22 pins off 16th placed, Christine Bator of USA on 2473. The two Singapore pairs winning a silver and bronze put them firm favourite to do well in the team events which begins on Thursday July 29.
